Building a Brand with Balance

Rebalancing Workloads to Increase Value

Many who have been on my team have heard me talk about the 80/20 rule.

I remember why I did it, I remember the impact it had on team members, and I remember the benefit it had on an organization and building brand advocacy. It is extremely effective with people just learning not only a new job or an industry--but in ensuring continuous growth and learning.

How?

Staff your team and stack projects to ensure that no team member is consistently over 80% of time and effort on the work they HAVE to do.  Keep in mind that for some weeks it is unavoidable based on business--but the rule should be maintainable for the majority of the time.

Why?

Giving your team members 20% of their day to skill build or allow them to seek out learning opportunities related to their job function will result in unlimited positive returns.

What?

I am not suggesting people doing nothing for 20% of their day. What I am suggesting and found success in is carving out 20% of their time to find ways to improve the work they do for the organization. Practice a new skill, refine an old one, search the internet to find inspiration, differentiators, and follow trends. Then set time so they can tell you about what they learned and identify how these news ideas or skills can benefit the work.

The results.

Team members never stop learning. They find some form of inspiration every day. You are more likely to get 150% passion and effort on the 80% must do workload--resulting in absolute greatness. More importantly, they will continue to be inspired and fulfilled in what they do.

Your brand will reap the rewards.
